Truong Son, Thao Nguyen win medals at Asian Chess Champ
VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese chess players Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Pham Le Thao Nguyen played very well at the 10th Asian Individual Chess Championships, which closed on May 10 in Iran.
With 6 points after nine games, Thao Nguyen won a silver medal for women’s event. Four other players had the same points, but the Vietnamese player won the medal because she gained advantage in sub-factors. The gold medal winner recorded only 4.5 points.
Thao Nguyen and the champion – Harika Dronavalli from India, will represent Asia at the World Individual Chess Championships 2011.
In the men’s event (for male player with Elo of at least 2300), Vietnamese competitor Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2635) ranked third after winning 6.5 marks after 9 sets.
With this result, Son will get a ticket to the World Individual Chess Championships 2011, and the World Chess Championship 2011, though he did not participate in the Asian Chess Championship 2011, and ranked fifth at last year’s event. At the Asian Chess Championship 2011, two Vietnamese players Cao Sang and Dao Thien Hai ranked only 21st and 43rd.
Last year, Thao Nguyen was placed 17th and Truong Son 20th.
In the blitz chess event, Hoang Thi Bao Tram took the gold after defeating her stronger Chinese rival Tan Zhongyi in the final match on May 11.
