Three Way Tie Playoff Information
There is currently a tie between Parker Zhao, Sam Shankland, and Ray Robson for 1st place. The 2010 U.S. Junior Closed Champion will be determined by an Armageddon playoff. Ray Robson, by virtue of being first on tiebreaks, has elected to receive a bye in the first round of the playoff. Parker Zhao and Sam Shankland will play a game to determine who will play Ray Robson for the championship.
In this game, both players will bid on how much time they are willing to start with, between 1 minute and 45 minutes. Whoever bids the lesser amount of time has the option to choose his color, with the black pieces getting draw odds (meaning that in the case of a draw, black is declared the winner). Whoever loses the bid will receive a full 45 minutes, with both players receiving a 5 second increment for each move.
The winner of that game will have his choice of color in the championship game, with black again having draw odds. In the championship game, each player will have 45 minutes with a 5 second increment for each move.

This idiotic system again? This is not chess, this is gambling. Who’s the genius behind this?
Stupid system. You state that Robson is first on tiebreaks. Why not either use numerical tiebreaks, or have co-champions – as the USCF rules state?
This is a mockery to chess.
Thats a crazy tiebreak system bidding on your time, and takes away something from an otherwise interesting event.
This type of tiebreak is something you would do on a club night at a chess club when the club captain has had to much too drink.
All games should be played under the same conditions for everyone in each game in order to be fair and get a fair result
I like it. This is how I will run chess.
This is simply not a good or fair system. I wish the organizer would reconsider this weird playoff system, especially for kids. It’s not a good thing to encourage them to gamble instead of playing good chess. Otherwise it’s been a nice event.
Will the spectators be given face masks and crotch protectors?
Another great tournament ruined because of the wacky playoff tiebreaker system.
