1. Rf7+ to deflect the queen wins. 1. – Qxf7? 2. Rh4+ (with the end the first published post from 8:35 supposes almost correctly ;)) 1. -, Kg8? 2. Qg7#
1. -, Kh6!? should live longest. Maybe even 2. Rxe7 ends by mate (with Rh1+ (not time for b1Q 3. Rh4#) 3. Kxh1, b1Q+ 4. Kh2 to follow) but I prefer the check by check line: 2. Rxg6+!, Kxg6 3. Qg7+, Kh5 4. g4+, Kh4 5. Qh6+, Kxg4 6. Rf4# (and Rh1 double check mate – oups, no fairy chess allowed…)
1. Rf7+, Qxf7
2. Rh4+, Kg8
3. Rh8#
this should be a “10-second” puzzle. Rf7+ with the idea of Rh4+
1. Rf7+ Qxf7 2. Rh4+ Kg8 3. Rh8#
I think that’s the only line. 🙂 If not, black loses his queen.
1. Rh4+ Kg8 2.Rh8 #. Easy.
1.Rf7+…Qf7
2.Rh4+…Kg8
3.R(orQ)h8 mate
1.Rh4+ loses to 1…Qh4+
Rf7+ leads to mate in all variations
Qxf7 Rh4-h8
Kg8 Qg7
Kh6 Qe3 Kh5 Qh3
Kh6 Qe3 g5 Qh3 Kg6 Qh7
An easy one : 1- Rf7 deviation ! Qxf7 2- Rh4 Kg8 3- Qh8
Above only works if preceded by Rf7+ Qxf7.
@Anon 8:35:00
1.Rh4+ loses instantly because of Qxh4+.
Correct is 1.Rf7+! which leads to a forced mate:
a) If 1…Qxf7, 2.Rh4+…Kg8, 3.Rh8#
b) If 1…Kh6, 2.Qg7+…Kh6, 3.Qxg6#
c) If 1…Kg8, 2.Qg7#
1.Rh4?? Qxh4
So first 1.Rf7+ Qxf7 (otherwise 2.Qg7) 2.Rh4+ Kg8 3.Rh8#
I must admit I got the right idea from anon 8:35am
Kind regards,
PdV
but with 1. Rf7+ before !
1. Rh4?? Qh4
Instead: Rf7+!!
1.Rf7+ Qxf7 2.Rh4+ Kg8 3.R(Q)h8#
Rf2+ if Qxf2 then Rh4
if Kg8 then Qg7
1. Rf7+ to deflect the queen wins.
1. – Qxf7? 2. Rh4+ (with the end the first published post from 8:35 supposes almost correctly ;))
1. -, Kg8? 2. Qg7#
1. -, Kh6!? should live longest. Maybe even 2. Rxe7 ends by mate (with Rh1+ (not time for b1Q 3. Rh4#) 3. Kxh1, b1Q+ 4. Kh2 to follow) but I prefer the check by check line:

Is it right!? Let’s hope so. 🙂

> 1. Rh4+ Kg8 2.Rh8 #. Easy.
1. … Qxh4+ ?
But if you start with Rf7+ your idea works.
The distraction 1.Rf7+! seems to be the most straightforward way to win for white.

@anon 08:35 1….Qxh4+ -+
but the idea is correct, you just have to prepare it with
1.Rf7+ Qxf7
2.Rh4+ Kg8
3.Rh8# or Qh8#
Sorry Anon, but Rh4+ can be met with Qxh4+ and white is in big trouble.
I think:
1. Rf7+ Qxf7, and now
2. Rh4+ Kg8
3. Qh1#
You first have to get rid of the queen to avoid 1… Qxh4, so
1. Rf7+ Qxf7 2. Rh4+ Kg8 3. Rh8#
if 1… Kg8, 2. Qg7# and if 1… Kh6, 2. Qg7+ Kh5 3. Qxg6#
“b) If 1…Kh6, 2.Qg7+…Kh6, 3.Qxg6#”
Oh my god how simple can it be if you are not blind? Why do I only find this mate in 6 proceeding with 2. Rxg6+?!
Lately it seems I am often going to miss the simple lines…
(But only 2 other posters even analyse this line… rest just wants to take queen after Kh6?)
Thanks, US (and Eric Cartman) for posting this line.
