The American men’s team had big problems in round 1 where they were expected to score a big win. Remember, the Olympiad is NOT about match scores but individual points. Therefore, every point counts!
The 7th ranked US Men’s Team faced a weaker #79th ranked New Zealand team with 3 IMs and 1 FM. Onischuk, Ibragimov and Akobian all drew against players a few hundred points below them. Only Kaidanov won on board 3 for a 2.5 – 1.5 US win. This is a slow start for the US men’s team. I hope they can come back and have a big second round.
According to the official site, the US Women’s Team won by a 2 – 1 margin. However, on the Olympiad site, it shows that the team won by a 3 – 0 margin. I believe 3 – 0 is the correct score.
The Russian Men’s and Women’s Team scored 7-0 as expected. It would be a big upset if the Russians do not walk away with double Gold medals by a wide margins. The Indian Men’s team was upset by Morocco!
We need Susan on board 1 for the US. Shame on the USCF officials for destroying the best US Women’s Team ever!
I think both US Men’s and Women’s Teams will finish out of medals. The choices for captains is bizzare as well.
Meanwhile, Russia scored 4-0 against Kazakhstan (Men) and 3-0 against Portugal (Women). Every single point clean-swept.
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone can provide the link to the results section? How did the opening ceremony go?
Thanks!
Don’t bother with the site. It’s down all the time. I think Susan gets the results up faster than the main site.
Hi,
I just went to the website, and it said that US women scored 3-0 against Bangladesh:

Dear Susan,
Don’t be so upset with upsets. Be cool. Save your energy. Don’t worry. The US team will score well in the end.
Remember, in chess, a grandmaster title doesn’t guaranteee a win against international masters in every game.
Your title should have been: US Team undefeated in round one!
Just advice.
Susan:
It might interest you to know that one of your proteges WGM Anya Corke representing Honk Kong got a draw against GM Vladimir Georgiev.
There are at least one hundred individual upsets in both Olympiad competitions. This is life. And sport. The young are constantly overtaking the aging granddaddys of chess.
Who is Vladimir Georgiev?
Whats the difference between the offical site and the olympiad site? what is the “official site”?
“WGM Anya Corke representing Honk Kong got a draw against GM Vladimir Georgiev.”
Why are women allowed to play with men, when they have their own Olympiad?
How can a man play good chess, looking four hours at a beautiful woman?!
“Whats the difference between the offical site and the olympiad site? what is the “official site”? “
Is that a trick question?
where was Naka?
damn….you…where…was….naka?
Anya Corke is just a small girl.
A small girls making a draw with a Grandmaster?!
All I can say is that there are different kinds of Grandmasters. In chess, you don’t have to confirm your GM title to keep it, right? So, once you get it, you’re a GM forever? That might explain why all GMs are not really GMs any more.

“Shame on the USCF officials for destroying the best US Women’s Team ever!”
Maybe they didn’t have enough money to support the requirements of nursing such an expensive team?
Please forgive Susan. She is well schooled in the American form of reporting news. Rule #1 be negative all the time
Vladimir Georgiev (Macedonia/ Illinois) is not a bad GM, he is now 2535 and was 2596 only 2 years ago. He is USCF 2611. Let’s say, not weaker than Susan Polgar.
Maybe there are different kinds of ‘small girls’ as well as different kinds of Grandmasters.
