Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
I’m surprised Letters from Iwo Jima has been left out. But I am very pleased to see you mentioning The Devil Wears Prada. I actually thought that was probably the best film of the summer for 2006.
I saw The Departed…excellent film. I don’t know if the Academy will be shoehorned into giving Martin Scorsece his first and ONLY Oscar when The Departed will be his last directing effort – correct me if I’m wrong on that score.
I think Meryl Streep will win for Best Supporting Actress! This would actually be embarrassing and a scandal because this year…women in acting roles were actually zilch. Nada…nowhere to be found. The only possible exception may be Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde in X-Men 3) when she headlined Hard Candy.
The Departed was a classic, and ended like Shakespeare would have it. I liked this film very much, especially Leo’s character and his psychological struggles.
I’m not sure if Borat should get a category of its own and rightly should be left off your list…even though it was quite clever.

Anonymous you forgot about Helen Mirren in The Queen. I think the Departed was excellent and the Devil wears Prada was very good too. I have not seen many others.

🙂
Just kidding.
Borat.
My vote goes to “Thank You for Smoking” mostly for originality and execution of a difficult theme.
Saw “Casino Royale”. Good action, but James Bond has savoir. Since Pierce Brosnan, they’ve played him like he is Mike Hammer. That kind of gritty style is appropriate for Hammer, not Bond.
Also saw MI3. It is too much of a Tom Cruise vehicle. The TV show was an ensemble. It had a chess-like emphasis on strategy and problem solving. That’s what I wanted.
“Pirates 2” and “Superman Returns” extended their respective franchises. I liked “Pirates”; hated “Superman”.
Easy…. BORAT!!
Can’t agree with Jack, re Casino Royale.
As one who read all the original books when I was at school, I was delighted to see a portrayal of the character much closer to the original Flemming intention. That seems to be the view of many here in the UK.
Pirates 2 and Borat share equal honours this year for me.
Pirates is a technical tour de force, with a great lead performance, and I have never laughed out loud as much as I did at Borat.
