Who are the top 10 celebrity chess enthusiasts today?
Here are some by random order:
– Will Smith
– Howard Stern
– Guy Ritchie / Madonna
– Lennox Lewis
– Shaun Alexander
– Priest Holmes
Which other celebrities would you put on this top 10 list?
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
How about…
Shaun Alexander (American NFL player)
Woody Harrelson (there is a picture o f him playing Kasparov)
And I think there are several American rap music stars including Jay-Z. (I think he does an ad for HP laptops where he mentions he plays chess online with friends)
TT
Jay-Z, interesting that he plays on line with friends. That’s where the action is in chess these days. I think about all the people I know who play on line regularly — from Jay Z and Howard Stern to my dad’s personal trainer to an ex-boyfriend who sold his software company for 25 million dollars a few years ago to my kids. (Note: Of all the people I mentioned, the only ones who have played at OTB chess tournaments are my kids.) That’s the future of chess. Unfortunately, the USCF is run by a bunch of dinosaurs who would rather hold on to their pathetically small slice of the pie than get with the program.
Oh, additional chess playing celebrities: Sting, Bob Dylan, Bono
Also, the new manager of the Yankees: Joe Girardi (who went to Northwestern). Older/deceased celeb chess players: Humphrey Bogart, Jack Kerouac
Don’t forget ARNOLD the Governator.. with his WINNER seat and the other guy’s seat designated loser.
Castro, Kasparov, Anand, Judit Polgar

How about Georges “Rush” St. Pierre who is a mixed martial arts fighter?
He said the following in an interview:
“I play hockey, but I’m just average. I also play chess which I am very good. I used to play for my high school. I won regional tournaments but never the provincials. At one point I was ranked in the top 25 of Quebec.”

I wasn’t, however, able to find the rating of Georges in the FQE rating list. (See http://www.fqechess.qc.ca ) However, whether his boast is true or not, he is definitely an enthusiast.
Good luck, “Rush” !!
Nigel Hanrahan
Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA
Don Imus. Former Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry. The late Bobby Darin.
Jamie Lynn Spears!!
WNBA fans all know Minnesota Lynx star and Russian national team member as well as member of the 2000 National Champion UConn Lady Huskies, Svetlana Abrosimova plays quite a bit of chess and claims to be about an 1800 level player.
Fedor Emelianenko. The greatest MMA fighter.
Ray Charles was a big fan of chess. I believe he graced the cover of Chess Life once.
How about all-time favorite chess
quotes? One of my favorites, for
example (I paraphrase) is:
Russian players know how to castle
as soon as they come out of the
womb.
The Hip Hop star with the sobriquet ‘GZA’ from the well regarded Wu Tang Clan is also a player, and has set up a foundation to teach chess to kids: The Hip-Hop Chess Federation.
Brad Hoehne
Oh, and I forgot, the great director Stanley Kubrick was a chess maven, supposedly attaining master status in the 40s and 50s and hustling chess for money before becoming famous.
Brad Hoehne
Correction: the above mentioned Hip-Hop star is ‘RZA’ not ‘GZA’ (who might also play, but is not the performer I was thinking of)
