Talking to journalists after visiting former President Heydar Aliyev’s grave, Zhukov praised ties between the Russian and Azerbaijani Olympic committees.
“A cooperation deal has been signed just recently. It envisages participation in contests, training sessions, preparation of sportsmen and coaches and the use of training facilities,” Zhukov said.
“President Ilham Aliyev and I also discussed humanitarian cooperation between our countries. It is developing intensively. It concerns youth exchanges, concerts and so on. We also spoke about chess. There are many talented young chess players in Azerbaijan. Some of them are in the elite of world chess. We are always very pleased to welcome Azerbaijani chess players.”
The Russian official was upbeat on Azerbaijan’s medal chances at the 2012 Olympics in London.
“Azerbaijan is getting better in the Olympic Games. The dynamics are very positive from one medal to seven medals in Beijing. I think Azerbaijan has great medal chances in several sports. These are boxing and wrestling, which are traditional for Azerbaijan, as well as a new sport [for Azerbaijan], rowing. We hope the Azerbaijani team will do well. We always wish our friends success.”
Talking about the 28 May holiday, Zhukov said: “I would like to congratulate all the citizens of Azerbaijan on the upcoming Republic Day. And certainly I would like to extend my wholehearted congratulations on your victory in Eurovision. We were supporting your wonderful guys. Russia gave top points to Azerbaijan.”
Zhukov is to visit the Tennis Academy, the Sarhadchi Olympic Sports Centre and the Museum of Modern Art. An excursion to Baku’s medieval walled city, the Ichari Shahar, and the Olympic sports complex in Shagan are planned for tomorrow.
