Until Carlsen finally made it to the top in 2007/08 nobody really showed up since Kasparows’ ascent around 1978-84 to take the “lead” in chess.
BTW it was high time that this happened, given the availability of grandmaster-strenght chess computers since around 1995; that means Carlen for example (in contrast to Kasparow and others before him: Fischer, Karpov…) could train with the help of such engines since his first steps in chess.
His “style” to play a wide range of openings with opting for side-variations and to exploit positional minimal advantages could IMO be a result of lifelong training with computers.
Very interesting to follow his development.
Karjakin may be even a greater “talent” than Carlsen (he got the GM title a few month younger than Carlsen) but so far he did not have the high profile successes like Carlsen.
Maybe this tournament will turn out to be the first real clash between two future antagonists for the world crown like Karpov-Kasparow, or Fischer-Spassky…
Carlsen just mated Shirov!!!
