A few months ago, GM-elect Robert Hess came to Texas Tech University in search of a GM norm at the 2009 SPICE Spring Invitational. He told me his plan is to play all summer long to get obtain his GM title. His FIDE rating at that time was 2485.
The summer vacation has not even started yet for most students in New York and his rating has jumped a whopping 75.3 points! That would bring his new FIDE rating to around 2560! He will be officially confirmed as America’s newest GM by the next FIDE congress!
Congratulations to Robert! Well done!
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Why does he need to wait for a FIDE Congress to be approved? Can you make the upgrade now?
I’ll be rooting for Robert to break 2600 FIDE in the near future and to be selected as a member of the Olympiad team in 2010.
I may be exaggerating a little bit…but doesn’t he have an uncanny resemblance to the late Bobby Fischer?!
very talemted young man. will definitely break 2600 by the end of the year.
Go Robert!
Resemblance to Fischer? Well Fischer was 6′ 2 and Hess is more like 5′ 2.
Yea a very obvious resemblance!
So will he go the way of Tal Shaked and exit chess for a more stable and lucrative career in the normal world? If so, why bother to get excited about him; he won’t end up chess-significant.

Why not go both ways like Gata and “Have it All!”(tm).
