1. McCain was so much more natural when he gave that speech last night – I wish he had spoken like that throughout the election – that there aren’t easy answers to difficult problems and that slogans and quips won’t solve the very real problems we all face.
2. Obama’s victory should give pause the many critics around the world. Yes, the USA in the last 8 years has done much to the dismay of its staunchest allies but consider what other country could elect a minority member whose name is quite different than those of the founding leaders to its highest office? Could we see a black PM in England whose dad was Jamaican? Could we see a French President whose father was from the Congo? Could we see Italian president whose father was from Ethiopia? Could any of the middle east nations which hold elections (not ruled by dictators) elect someone whose family lines couldn’t be traced to some main tribe? In recent history the only example I could think of is when Peru elected Fujimoro. So this is a historical moment and in the din of the criticism (much well deserved) aimed at the USA, let’s give the people there some credit!
