    i don’t see a mate, but i do see a way to win the night with:

    1. Rxf8+.

    if 1. … Qxf8 2. Qd5+ Kh8 (if 2. … Qf7 3. Re8#) 3. Qxc4.

    if 1. … Kxf8 2. Qd6+ Kg8 (if 2. … Qe7 3. Qxe7+ Kg8 4. Qxg7#) 3. Qd8+ Qf8 (if 3. … Qe8 4. Qxe8#) 4. Qd5+ and we have the same position as above after white’s second move.

    does there exist a mate that i’ve missed?

    White is a piece up and should win easily from here.

    Took me a while to find the line but Rxf8+ wins (after some nagging continuation by black) for sure.

    1. Rxf8+ Qxf8
    2. Qd5+ Kh8
    3. Qxc4 Qb8
    4. Qc7 Qg8
    5. Qd7 Rxd4
    6. Qxd4 …etc.

    There doesn’t appear to me to be a forced mate. But this should suffice to win the game:

    1. Rxf8+ Qxf8 or [ 1. … Kxf8 2. Qb8+ Rc8 3. Qxc8 + Qe8 4. Qxe8#]
    2. Qd5+ Kh8 or [1. … Qf7 2. Re8#]
    3. Qxc4 should be winning

    I don’t find anything better than

    1. Rf8 Qf8 (Kf8 2.Qb8+-)
    2. Qd5 Kh8 (Qf7 3.Re8#)
    3. Qc4 and white is up a piece for a pawn. Why do I get the feeling I am missing a mate here?

    I am entering too late.In Knockout 2010’s 3rd variation viz.
    1Rxf8+ Qxf8
    2Qd5+ Kh8
    3Qxc4 h6
    Here I prefer
    4Qc6 with multiple threats.You will get King,Queen or both.But where is Venky?
