Standart News
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and World Chess title contender Veselin Topalov played together a game of chess against the “Great Powers.” The match took place at the Military Club in Sofia downtown on Friday.
Topalov played simultaneously against the ambassadors of the countries that a hundred years ago, in the spring of 1909 recognized Bulgaria’s independence. The brave diplomats who dared face the world champion were from Russia, the Great Britain, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, Germany and Italy.
“Thanks to Topalov’s supreme skills, Bulgaria won over the Great Powers,” Stanishev said. The 19th world chess champion opened the match against France’s ambassador to Bulgaria, HE Etienne de Poncins. The last to resign was Germany’s military attache, Lieutenant Colonel Axel Putz.
