Chess glory for St Jude’s

ST JUDE’S PRIMARY SCHOOL recorded a whopping 59 points, just seven short of a perfect score, along with an unblemished 6-match run, to comprehensively win the recently concluded 2007 United Insurance Inter-Primary School Team Chess Championships.
In the drama that unfolded in the final two rounds of play, St Jude’s, who were led by the outstanding play of the gifted Mia Mascoll, held a seven-point lead over their closest rivals and defending champions St Gabriel’s. They then sped away with the championships by adding 20 points to their overnight score of 39.
These points came from a 9-2 victory over Christ Church Boys’ in Round 5 and in the final match they left St Angela’s “A” nursing an 11-0 defeat to win the championships comfortably.
With the No.1 spot wrapped up and out of the reach of the other teams, all attention was directed toward the battle for second, third and fourth places.
