The elite annual Grandmaster tournament held in Morelia, Mexico, and Linares, Spain, has completed its Mexican leg.
World Champion Viswanathan Anand of India recovered from a spectacular loss in the second round to finish the first half with a slender margin over his two closest competitors.
Standings after seven rounds in Morelia: 1. Anand, 4.5 points from 7; 2-3. Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Alexei Shirov (Spain), both 4; 4-5. Levon Aronian (Armenia), Magnus Carlsen (Norway), both 3.5; 6-7. Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), both 3; 8. Peter Leko (Hungary), 2.5.
The event has been a chess fan’s dream, as more than half of the 28 games played have been decisive, with no player having gone undefeated. Certainly, the games have been flawed in some instances, but the fighting aspect has made for an extremely interesting event. The action continues in Linares, and finishes March 8.
