Is that on the Texas Tech campus? It looks like: (a) the sentry Rover on the old TV series, The Prisoner, (b) world’s largest steelie marble, (c) ball bearing from the world’s largest pair of roller skates.
4 pm central is 5 pm eastern time.
This is right outside of the student union builsing.
Yeah, it’s supposed to be some kind of representation of the sun. It has two bells inside that can be played using handles at opposite ends. They are tuned to a particularly annoying dissenance and get played by people wandering past all the time.
I don’t get it either.

Still no Miton? Is he coming?
The name of the sculpture is the Comma. Artist is Po Shu Wang orginally from Hong Kong. This is a spherical resonator and was pointed out is supposed mimic the sound of the Sun. The name comma refers to the two bells that can be use to ring the larg ball. They resonante one “comma” apart from each otherr. The first bell is at 1782.6 Hz, the second one interval apart from the other.
The Comma is an example of the many excellent displays of public art on the Tech campus. The art collection was recently recognized as one of the top ten university public art collection in the US.
Sincerely,
Dr. Karlsson
P. S. There is nothing to “get” from art or music. You simply enjoy it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love what they’re doing with the place and I really enjoy much of the new sculpture around campus. It’s just this particular piece that bugs me.
Very possibly because I often eat lunch within earshot of it. 🙂
