Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
very nice game from So.
if he can keep this level he’ll join the +2700 club very soon.
Wow! What a game!
He is indeed a phenom! As I have said, Susan & Paul should use all of her power to try to get this kid to be a part of TTU chess team!
To Anon 3:55…as I’ve said before, it won’t take much from Susan to get Wesley intereted in Tech. I’ve spoken with his parents and I know they want him to go to college and for him to be able to go to college in America is a double thrill. Question is: with his success in chess, will he want to go to college? And with only 10 years of pre college education (as standard in the Philippines) will he be able to qualify academically for Tech?
To Scugrad.
I hope he will qualify to enter college in the US as many other highschool grads from Philippines come to the US to pursue college education. Of course, with his success in chess, there is a real chance that he will pursue a professinal chess career instead of going to college.
Having said that, I am just one of those smalltime guys who happened to like what SPICE is doing and comes to their events. Also, a portion of my professional growth was from Texas Tech and I also happen to be a Filipino just like Wesley. I would love to see him be a part of a contending Texas Tech chess team, I guess from a chess fan standpoint.
Thank the universe for Campo making Wesley So a great chess player!
Wesley is to chess as Manny is to boxing.
You cannot win against Wesley in a tactical melee. You’ll get knocked out 🙂
Agree with Scud, me thinks Wesley might be better off on honing up and concentrating on his chess talents.
If he comes to the U.S. and or Europe and does well, goodbye Philippines. Hopefully not.
BTW Pinay, read my lips: THE UNIVERSE THANKS THE HONORABLE PICHAY FOR REVITALIZING AND SAVING PHILIPPINE CHESS FROM YOUR CROOKED CAMPO.
YOU ARE JUST REMINDING THE WORLD ON HOW CAMPO USES PEOPLE AND TAKES CREDIT FOR THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS.
WESLEY’S PARENTS ARE SMART ENOUGH TO GET HIM THE HELL AWAY FROM THE DIRTY PAWS OF CAMPO.
I’m sure Wesley can get a full scholarship from Texas Tech and Susan immediately if he wishes. In fact I think it’s a great match because not only he can get a great education, he can also get additional training from her to get to the next level. Great idea Scugrad. You should have So or his family email her.
Tech sure needs So because UTD and UTB is tearing TTU up.
I agree with SCUGrad. 10 years of basic ed in the Philippines is quite tough as a prelude to US College. We lack not only the two years of education but that of maturity. Our college studes here become mature only when they reach third year. I am a college professor and I know that’s a fact. Also, subtract from the 10 years of basic education the times SO had to absent from his classes.
And yes, when you have his talent, college education seems to something that can be pushed aside (temporarily or otherwise). Congratulations, Wesley.
I just hope we can stop making useless Pichay-Campo comments. Let us focus on our compatriot. Campo did not make So great. Be realistic.
this kid produced very exciting games! how old is he?
Wesley is 15 now I think.
I like his opening lines of h3 and g4, and his all out Q pawns attacks.
It would be interesting if he can play those lines against strong 2600 or 2700 opponents.
Wesley needs to play Karjakin and or Carlsen, 2700 players, to become world class 2700 level.
Is he ready? Not without support.
And Campo’s Pinay sure is getting desperate for underserved attention, sick and sad.
I hope organizers and sponsors would think of bringing carlsen, karjakin, caruana etc over here in Manila so Wesley would have a chance to face them. That would definitely rock Filipino chess fans and expect a warm reception for this elite players.
That’s a great idea. It should be a tournament of teenage chess stars and should include female stars like Kuneru Humpy and Hou Yifan. But the prizes should be quite high since top players like Carlsen and Karjakin won’t play for peanuts.
“But the prizes should be quite high since top players like Carlsen and Karjakin won’t play for peanuts.”
if Wesley wins group c convincingly billiard/pool sponsors (where the moneys are) in the Philippines might turn their attention on sponsoring the event. it may be a long shot but who knows?
for now, we can only hope.
So far So has played three 2700+ players and scored +1 over these “Hydra GMs”: A win against Ni Hua and a draw against Shirov in the Dresden Olympiad, and a draw against Karjakin playing black in the Asian club championship. In a news article here in the Philippines, So announced that his immediate goal right now is to become a “Hydra GM” himself.
