Defending champion Viswanathan Anand and challenger Boris Gelfand are set to fight for the World Chess Championship title in a rapid chess tie-breaker on Wednesday.
Gelfand held Anand, winner of the bi-annual event since 2008, to a draw in the best-of-12-match clash that ended on Monday with both players tied on six points after each of them won a game and the remaining 10 ended in stalemates.
The rapid tie-breaker will being with four games with 25 minutes given to each player and a 10 seconds increment after each move.
In case this does not determine the winner, the two players will be involved five blitz rounds with each set carrying two games. Just five minutes will be given to each player in this tie-breaker with a move fetching a three-second increase in the time.
In the case of the blitz also ending in a tie, the two players will go into an Armageddon game with the player playing with white pieces needing to win to claim the title.
The white pieces will be given five minutes for the game while the black pieces will have to defend with only four minutes at hand.

y all these rules just to see a champ emerge… y not let it b like boxing rules, i.e., in d event of a drawn outcome, d champ retains his title, period. y forcing a mistake thru these myriad of blitz games!! for me, such championship games should have adopted the clock we ordinary players deal with, viz, 3mins per move or forfeit. in this format, nobody gets to mull a move for an eternal 40mins or so!!!
Deciding a world championship on tiebreaks is a recipe for disqualifying the legitimacy of this championship. Magnus will have to host the next world championship based on classical chess and bring back legitimacy.
Technically played very well….but with absolutely no passion.
It is a sad that they must be prodded with Rapid and speed games to get them to play hard. Very sad.
