TBILISI, Georgia (Aug. 29) – Georgia severed diplomatic ties with Moscow on Friday to protest the presence of Russian troops on its territory. Russia said the move would only make things worse.
With European Union leaders set to discuss on Monday in Brussels how to deal with an increasingly assertive Russia, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin angrily warned Europe not to do America’s bidding and said Moscow does not fear Western sanctions.
Russia has faced isolation over its offensive in Georgia and stands alone in its recognition of breakaway regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The U.S. and Europe have closed ranks in condemning Russia’s actions but are struggling to find an effective response.
EU leaders are not expected to impose sanctions on Russia at their summit but may name a special envoy to Georgia to ensure that a cease-fire is observed, French and Belgian officials said.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russia will not be isolated over its conduct in Georgia and warned the Europe not to “serve” the United States. He also stressed Russia does not fear any Western sanctions, saying that if forced to choose between life and sausage, “we choose life.”
Here is the full story.
Putin is becoming a mad dictator.
Punish Russia.
“warned THE Europe”?? lol
Life or sausage? I would have picked sausage myself
scrugrad, can you send me an email again? I misplaced your email.
Thanks!

Putin may not be so crazy with his allegations headlined on CNN yesterday that the US had interfered in Georgia “to help the chances of one of the presidential candidates”. This USA Today story is from 2-1/2 weeks ago:

Which Presidential Candidate does the Georgian conflict help? Hillary Clinton? Ross Perot? Bozo the Clown? The dead remains of Ronald Reagan?
I think this is bull crap! Let Russia have Georgia! Maybe the Georgians will grow a pair and have a good old fashioned American-style civil war. I hear Georgia has some of Ukraine’ nukes. I onder if Georgia likes a scorched earth tactic?
With all my sympathy to
Georgia and its great people, their government made a sad political mistake. They connected with the wrong friends. It is unfortunate to say but being an ally of the USA does not seem like a good choice to make. Putin’s Russia is a too strong neighbor.I do not support Russian aggression but the US seems to be active near Russian border as if Russia is a sleeping bear that is indifferent to Western active diffusion.
Georgia should change its attitude in this conflict, even in the price of just claims. If not, I predict this will grow worse.
“We choose life”
Lol! This is Putin attempting to disguise his naked and aggressive invasion and annexation of another country as a noble thing. “We choose life”…what a joke. Tyrant.
Nice map in the heading with the first democratic state of Georgia expanding to the present day Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia (including Sochi). I think it wasn’t supplied with the text by the news agency 🙂
The map clearly marks the Yellow area as the 1921 borders of Georgia.
The Whitehouse comment on Putin’s remarks was “not rational”, which sums the whole episode up nicely. Let us hope the Russian parliament has the guts to stand up to him, rather than riding along on some patriotic crusade that can lead only to disaster.
