Pinoy chesser tied for top spot in Asian Youth Chess

MANILA, Philippines – International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia of the Philippines and Ma Zhonghan of China are tied for the lead after seven rounds of action in the Asian Youth Chess Championships in Sari, Iran.
Garcia, the top player of Ateneo de Manila University, defeated Javanbakht Nima of Iran, while Ma crushed Javidfard Amirsalar of Iran to share the top spot with six points each in the Boys 18-and-under division.
Le Tu Minh of Vietnam is at third place with 5.0 points.
Woman Fide Master (FM) Marie Antoinette San Diego of Dasmariñas, Cavite, meanwhile, defeated Senarath Kavindi Nipunika of Sri Lanka to raise her total to 3.5 points in the Girls 18-and-under.
In the Boys 16-and-under, FM Paulo Bersamina drew with Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam to climb to solo second place with 6.0 points after eight games.
Ella Grace Moulic lost to Mugunda Kumar Mahalakshmi of Iran to remain at 4.0 points. She dropped into a tie for seventh to 12th places in the Girls 16-and-under after eight games.
In the Boys 8-and-under, FM Alekhne Nouri defeated Sindarov Javokhir of Uzbekistan to raise his total to 5.0 points.
Jerlyn Mae San Diego lost to India’s Ravi Rakshitta, and is now stuck at 4.5 points in the Girls 8-and-under.
The country’s campaign in the tournament is supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.
