The 2015 event falls on the same year as the 80th birthday of the legendary Icelandic Grandmaster and former FIDE President Fridrik Olafsson, who even played in the tournament two years ago.
The organizers are hopeful to see further growth of the Reykjavik Open after having a record number of 255 participants from 35 countries in the previous event.
The tournament will be a 10-round Swiss with double-round on the second day to provide better chances for norm seekers. Top prize is 5000 EUR.
As every year the Reykjavik Open will offer attractive special events. The most popular is The Golden Circle tour, while other events are GM Lectures, Blitz Tournament, Football Match and the Pub Quiz.
Already registered are Grandmasters Granda Zuniga Julio PER 2674, Jones Gawain ENG 2664, Van Kampen Robin NED 2637, L’Ami Erwin NED 2630 and Jussupow Artur GER 2581.

Nice venue.
If i remember it, GM Wesley So in his twitter account already AGREED with the organizer to PARTICIPATE in 2015 Reykjavik Open. Wonder why this article still did not named him as participants… Surprise perhaps… 🙂
Wesley will not be playing at Reykjavik Open. He has a full academic load and cannot take off for 12 days.
GM Wesley So, you have 2 more years to finish college… FINISH it first. Its difficult to play professional chess & be an elite player while studying as your playing schedule/calendar is TOO RESTRICTIVE as it depends on your availability & not in conflict with your studies. While fellow young GM’s like Giri, MVL, Ding Liren & Caruana are progressing a lot as they tend to play monthly in tournaments any place in the world, yours is hampered not only by your studies but also with NCFP. As your fellow elite young GM’s level of competition increase ten-fold, you are contend in playing open tourney with weak field not because you wanted to but due to availability issues with your studies. Anyway good luck in your studies & hope you get your diploma. While your still studying, i dont expect you to play much often. Again good luck & God Bless
