Real game chess tactic Chess tactic, Puzzle Solving I just saw this position in the latest issue of Chess Today. It is White to move. What is the best continuation for White? Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
1.Rh7+, Kh7 2.Qh1+ and mate next move.

I don’t see any mate after 2…Kg6 actually. Maybe 1 Bf7 instead ?
One trick up White’s sleeve goes like this:
1.Bf7 Qf5
2.g6 h6
3.Rxh6+ gxh6
4.Bd4+ and 5.Qxh5#
I think this is the April Fool’s post, right? 😛
1.Bf7 Qf5
2.g6 h6
3.Rxh6+ gxh6
4.Bd4+ Rxd4 and I can’t see any continuation.
I think
3.Bxh6 looks demolishing…, but is Qf5 really the best black can do?
1.Bf7 Qf5
2.g6 h6
3.Rxh6+ gxh6
4.Bd4+ Rxd4 and I can’t see any continuation.
5.Qxh6# (sorry for the typo) doesn’t suit you?
The “mistake in a losing position” is 2…h6?, allowing the quick mate. With 2…h5 Black can drag things out for a while.
I think 3.Bxh6 looks demolishing
No question but that it wins, but mate in 3 with 3.Rxh6+ (or 3.Bd4, for that matter) seems more straightforward.
is Qf5 really the best black can do?
What improvement do you suggest? 1…Rd6, 1…h6, and 1…g6 don’t seem to fare any better than 1…Qf5.
The best is I think:
1. Rh7+ Kxh7
2. Bf7! and if Qh4 (to parry 3. Qh1 mate) there is 3. g6 mate.
The only move to parry both mates is Qh5, then 3. g6!+ Qxg6 and 4. Qh1 mate
The best is I think:
1. Rh7+ Kxh7
2. Bf7! and if Qh4 (to parry 3. Qh1 mate) there is 3. g6 mate.
“Mate”? 3…Kh8 wins with ease.
The only move to parry both mates is Qh5
2…Qh5?? 3.Bxh5.
then 3. g6!+ Qxg6 and 4. Qh1 mate
Sorry, but that’s not mate either — 4…Qh6.
Anon 4:51, I suspect that one of us has the diagram position wrong. After:
1.Rxh7+ Kxh7
2.Bf7
… Black has several winning moves, the best of which is 2…Rd1.
1. Bf7! and white is very well!!
1. … Qf5
2. g6 h5
3. Bd4 Rxd4 +-
or…
1. … Qxf2
2. g6 +-
Very bad is:
1. Rxh7? Kxh7
2. Bf7 Rd1! -+
