Peruvian chess players were ecstatic this week as they won first place at the 20th Panamerican Festival of Chess, which took place in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Their triumph has assured that they are a world power in the world of chess.
According to Terra, the competition took place this past 15 through the 20th of August, and during that time the Peruvian team won four gold medals, four silver and two bronze, giving them 181 points.
With pride and satisfaction, the Peruvian team was able to beat other countries such as Colombia, United States, Mexico, Brasil, and the home team, Argentina.
The players thanked those who supported them, especially family and friends, but they also were critical of the little support the sport receives from the Peruvian state.
The players Diego Cuellar and Aurora Felix, who are both 12 years old, state that the sport allows those who participate to develop their academic intellect as well as discipline.
Proud to “never return empty-handed” Renato Terry, a silver medal winner, stated that “we always bring medals to our country, and that is our pride.”
And Peru is proud of these individuals, who will now be traveling to Cali Colombia to participate in the Continental Tournament.
