CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur—GRANDMASTER (GM) Mark Paragua scored 1.5 points in the last two round to emerged as the overall champion in the just concluded 2012 Mayor Allen Singson Cup (Candon City Chess Championships) held here at the Stern Mall Social Hall in San Nicolas, Candon City, Ilocos Sur over the weekend.
The 2003 Southeast Asian Games most bemedalled athlete Paragua, who hails from Meycauayan-Marilao, Bulacan defeated fellow GM Darwin Laylo of Marikina City in the sixth and penultimate round then halved the point with GM Oliver Barbosa of Taytay, Rizal in the seventh and final round to finished with six points on account of five wins and two draws in the tough, seven-round tournament organized by the Candon City Chess Club led by project coordinator Jerry Malamion and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it’s president/ chairman Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and sponsored by Candon City Mayor Allen Singson.
The 1998 Disneyland, France World Rapid Under 14 champion Paragua opened his campaign in sizzling fashion, by beating Johnny Corrales of Cebu, NM Alex Milagrosa of Tagbilaran, Bohol and Fide Master Adrin Ros Pacis of Mandaluyong City in the first three rounds.
He drew with FM David Elorta of Makati City in the fourth then crushed IM Ronald Dableo of Manila in the fifth and Laylo in the sixth then split the point with Barbosa in the seventh round.
Tobacco Festival Chairman and No.1 Candon City Councilor Kristelle Singson, representing Candon City Mayor Allen Singson and project coordinator Jerry Malamion awarded the P15,000 top prize to Paragua.
Five players –Elorta, Barbosa, Dableo, IM Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo, NM Nelson Villanueva of Bacolod City– shared second to sixth places with 5.5 points.
Sharing the limelight were Mc Dominique Lagula of Far Eastern-FERN, Quezon City, who bagged the title in the 16 years old and under category; and Daniel John Lemi of Vigan, who copped the crown in the 12 years old and under division. Lagula and Lemi, both tallied 6.5 points apiece.
