The Ontario Open is an annual chess tournament sanctioned by the Ontario Chess Association and held traditionally over the Victoria Day long weekend by one of its four leagues.
This year’s event was held on May 21-23, at the Annex Chess Club, 918 Bathurst, Toronto.
Over 140 players competed in four sections: Crown, U2200, U1900 and U1600.
IM Nikolay Noritsyn was clear first in the Crown section with 5.0/6 and declared winner of the 2016 Ontario Open Championship. In a three-way tie for second, GM Bator Sambuev, IM Artiom Samsonkin, and FM Yuanchen Zhang finished at 4.5/6.
William Li, a regular Annex player, won the U2200 section with 5.0/6 points. Lali Agbabishvili from Hart House, Sergey Malakhovets, another Annex player, and Younan Ishoo, a newcomer on the Canadian chess scene, finish in a three-way tie for second with 4.5/6.
Scott Cliff and Dorian Kang finished tied for first in the U1900 section with 5.0/6.
Gryn Maksym scored a perfect 6.0/6 to win Under-1600, the biggest section of the tournament with 56 players.
