In an era of technological wonder, 10 teens battled each other without logging online or punching video controllers — their weapons of choice: a vinyl chess board and hard plastic playing pieces.
The contest played out in the library of Clark High School where the teens faced each other across square desks. Their nervous tics on display through folded arms on laps. The wrenched brows. The incessant tapping feet.
When the battle of wills and wiping of sweaty hands ended, one school claimed the title of San Antonio’s best high school chess team.
Clark High School won 3-0 over Antonian College Preparatory High School on Wednesday evening after a first round ended in a tie. The two teams beat out public and private schools from eight districts from September 2006 to March.
After the semi-finals Antonian ranked first, Clark second. The U.S. Chess Federation sanctioned the championship. Selby Anderson of the federation judged and officiated the matches.
“The competition is really friendly,” said Bill Jones, sponsor of the Clark team. “You don’t see attitudes come out, it’s pretty good in that regard.”

Is it just me or does everyone tap their feet while playing?
