High School Chess Players Attempt To Defend National Title
April 11, 2007
Students from Edward R. Murrow High School’s chess team get set to defend their fourth straight national title.
After winning the city and state championships, the team left for Kansas City Wednesday to compete in the national tournament.
The Brooklyn students practiced their strategies while waiting for their flight at the airport.
“We study openings, tactics, end games,” said their coach, Eliot Weiss. “All type of strategies, a lot of practice, a lot of practice on the internet, a lot of practice at the board.”

Not to take away the honors earned by Edward R. Morrow HS, but according to the 2006 Yearbook the Fitch Academy (AZ) won in 2003 and Catalina Foothills (AZ) won in 2005. How is this going for their 5th straight national title?

Ejhuerta brings up a good point but it is not straightforward. This is actually a point of discussion in the new book about this team. The 2003 and 2005 tournaments ended in a tie with equal scores for Edward Murrow HS but because of the costs of the tournament and staying another day for a play off is prohibitive, a series of complex tie breakers are used to determine who gets the trophy…hope that helps. Check the facts. Fitch Academy won 2003 Team title outright. There was no tie. The NY newspapers naturally favor their own, but this refusal to check the facts is disturbing and one reason why the media can not be relied upon.
Congratulations to Catalina Foothills High School, who can accurately state they have won 2 of the last 3 national titles.
