According to our friends at Chessdom, former World Champion Veselin Topalov will skip Corus, citing World Championship as his top priority.
Veselin Topalov rejected the invitation to participate at the next Corus Chess Tournament that is starting on January, newspaper “168 Chasa” reported. For many years he was regularly attending in Wijk an Zee, but his team has decided that this tournament is in collision with the training schedule for 2009, whose ultimate goal is the return of world championship title.
According to the same source, Topalov’s next year schedule is already cemented and he has signed all the contracts. Beside the World Championship cycle, another important commitment is series of Grand Slam tournaments. (ed note: Corus is also a Grand Slam event)
Return of the world championship title? Topalov has never been world champion before. Only FIDE Champion.
And FIDE stands for…? The Faithful Idealistic Community of Elects? OR perhaps the World Chess Federation…
Topalov, hence WAS a world champion, regardless of how that tweaks the bellies of his ill-wishers 🙂
who gives a toss?
I hear Topa is getting two new sponsors for this event: Pocket Fritz and K-Y Jelly.
Which world championship is Topalov preparing for? Against Anand? How is he so sure he will get past Kamsky or Shirov?

Are you for real?? Kamsky is no match for Topalov. And as for Anand….he better enjoy that title because Topalov will crush him
“As for Anand – Topalov will crush him”
Despite cheating and getting a free game Toppy could not gert past Kramnik, leave alone crush him. SAnand handily defeated Kramnik. Also Kramnik has proven himself to be a gentleman,at least across the board. Topalov in cahoots with Danailov are a disgrace to chess. Sure Topalov might win if the match is held in Bulgaria. His team will sink to any depths to defeat his opponent. Even if the preposterous toiletgate allegations were true, all I can say is ” you can beat a cheat only by cheating better” So if Topalov ever wins anything, his achievements will be sullied by the knowledge that he is not honest and unworthy.
ha ha ha…i have just read the joke of 2008…that topo will crush anand…we heard the same from kram fans before anand-kramnik match..the same fate awaits topo if at all he overcomes kamsky…topo is not a match for anand..not even can be compared between them….
Topalov a former World Champion?? Hahahaha! Get outta here!
