Navy Chess Club came ahead of Fischer Chess Club by a point to clinch the Sri Lanka Inter-club Super League Chess Championship 2012 held at Royal College, Colombo last Monday. The defending champions, Fischer CC led by Rajeendra Kalugampitiya started the tournament as favourites and the team was delivering the expected results until the final round of the tournament, but was edged out in the final round.
Fischer managed some outstanding results during the first six rounds. They defeated all the other teams by scoring 4.5 or more points out of 6 which was an absolutely remarkable achievement for a chess team but, league tournaments cannot be decided by the overall points, what matters in leagues is the match points and at the end of a shocking evening at Royal College that was what mattered as Navy stunned Fischer by beating them 4.5 – 1.5 to earn much required two match points.
T.U. Navin managed the only point for Fischer in the final while the rest of his team was taken to the cleaners by the expert moves of the veteran Navy chess players. National chess champion Isuru Alahakoon beat Lahiru Hapuarachchi while the former national chess champion Chinthaka Anuruddha was too good for the Fischer captain Rajeendra Kalugampitiya. The experience of Chandana Wijekoon and Prasanna Kurukulasuriya paid off for Navy when the duo managed to win over the promising youngsters of Fischer’s – Udith Jayasundara and Vidura Koggala. As a result Navy came from behind to seal an unlikely victory by 13 – 12 match points. Paul Morphy Chess Club meanwhile placed third with 10 match points and the NF3 Chess Club fell a point short of them to finish fourth. – [HA]
