Howard Stern talked about chess again for another 2-3 minutes on his show on Sirius this morning. I received a bunch of email and messages from chess fans informing me of this. He once again mentioned my name and my chess center. He was very respectful when he talked about me and my club. He said he would love to visit my club to play chess. The only problem is someone with his fame will attract the media everywhere he goes and he would not be able to play in peace. This time, he also mentioned my sisters. Howard absolutely loves chess. He plays chess every single day and he also plays on ICC daily.
After he talked about me, I received an email from his producer to contact his show. I was interviewed for a few minutes about how to help someone like Howard improve in chess. I also discussed other chess issues.
kewl….hey Howard i move 1. e4 🙂
Howard respecting woman? and chess?!
I listened to the show this morning. He worships Susan and he’s so polite talking about her. Amazing! Susan seems to have a positive affect on Howard.
HS is too wrapped up in his own persona (reflexive belief in his own infallibility) to devote the requisite time and concentration while deliberating an opponents strategy to ever be (or need to be) very good at chess.
Susan, mentioning Howard Stern is an embarassment to this blog. This is the guy who had starlets try out high tech vibrators during his TV show. Do you really want his chess patronage between Carmen Elektra’s moans as she rides the sex toy?
take your prudery somewhere else. why did you watch carmen elektra on the sybian anyway if you are so offended by it?
I am confused. I am not sure what Howard’s radio personality have anything to do with his love for chess? Does that mean I have to denounce every single politician who supports chess too? I do not listen to Howard’s show. I only listen to the part where he talks about chess when chess fans write me and let me know.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

Why clutch at this straw in the gutter for free publicity? I prefer to think that you are accepting very bad advisement. Please restore your blog’s previously family-friendly character and content.
Howard’s show is Entertainment only. No person or animal is harmed during the production. Something you find funny may not be funny to me. Something I find funny may be on Howard Stern’s show.
Remember, respect others. That includes EVERYONE. Not just the people who agree with you.
And finally, you may change the dial at any time! There are hundreds of channels on Sirius, XM, AM, FM, etc…
I think Howard Stern appears crass and a little too inclined to R- and X-rated shows for many people. As such he may come off as an unattractive promoter of chess. You probably wouldn’t bother mentioning porn stars who play chess as a sign of chess popularity.
It’s not prudery to object to the Stern-chess combo, its a desire to separate different aspects of life. For example, I take my children to chess tournaments, but I would make sure they don’t get to see Carmen Elektra episode. Or is it too romantic to think that chess would do better with promoters who have a cleaner image?
Going along with what Susan stated about HS’s radio persona vs. his love of chess:
If we examine the lives of some of society’s greatest contributors, we find they were not exemplary people. The attitude of some of you bloggers makes no sense to me. Do you read Edgar Allen Poe (drug addict)? Do you listen to Mozart (alleged womanizer)? Do you (gasp!) study the chess games of Alekhine (alleged Nazi supporter)?
Say what you will about Howard Stern, but people listen to (and enjoy) his show/personality. Some people will believe anything they are told, and in this case that is good. If HS says that chess is a wonderful game, and that Susan is one of its most outstanding proponents, the public will listen and this may help generate a resurgence in the interest of chess in this country.
if your kids only read susan’s mention of howard’s love of chess and you didn’t let them see you watch howard’s show with carmen electra, then where is the problem?
>>Howard’s show is Entertainment only. No person or animal is harmed during the production. Something you find funny may not be funny to me. Something I find funny may be on Howard Stern’s show.
>>
LOL, how many shows DO hurt people and animals? Pretty lame defense. I think you missed the point, which is that Stern isn’t exactly family friendly entertainment.
>>And finally, you may change the dial at any time! There are hundreds of channels on Sirius, XM, AM, FM, etc…
>>
The point you’re missing is that we don’t WANT people changing the channel on chess. Geez, this ain’t rocket science.
I finally figured out why my daughter couldnt access this blog. When you post HS name on here my adult content filtering software will not let her visit the site.
Does Howard Stern’s professional career reflect upon his personal character?
Of courser it does…and this can reflect both good and bad on him. Case in point, consider these two famous individuals:
The first individual, although never marrying, was lifelong devout to a single mistress, he eschewed alcohol, railed against the ill effects of tobacco, and even claimed to be deeply religious; what’s more he possessed an unblemished service record and was even noted for his valor in the line of fire.
The second individual had numerous affairs, drank heavily, and loved smoking, what’s more he was removed from at least one prestigious military post due to his periodic lapses in good judgment.
————————————-
Of course, you know the first individual better as Adolph Hitler…
…and the second individual better as Winston Churchill
I see. I see.
Your point is that Howard Stern has voluntarily made himself a public figure, so of necessity we must weigh the total package. Thus, moving above argumentum ad hominem attacks. i.e., if Howard supports one position or mode of living and/or preference in front of the public eye, how can he in good conscience (sincerity) propose to live another.
Nobody is saying that Howard Stern is a bad guy. Some people are saying that Stern does not really fit into the kid-friendly image of chess most people are trying to maintain. I remember Susan being quite dismissive of the so-called “Anna Kournikovas” of chess, but somehow she seems to approve of Stern. Why? Pretty babes may also be good publicity, and they definitely love chess and devote a lot of time to it.
As one person posted earlier, parental controls block sites that mention Howard Stern. That’s simply a confirmation of this reality. And it’s not prudery. His show may be great entertainment, but promotion of chess would be better off on Oprah or Larry King.
Hmmm…gauging whether Stern is employing a double standard (of convenience) do as I say, not as I do, or just throwing his weight around is one thing, and in this vein it is easy to envision H. Stern’s personal philosophy:
“Sure people, I may openly promote/broadcast sex on public air-waves, but hey it’s a free world, and so what if I inadvertently prey on children in the process, I didn’t mean to. After all, freedom of speech (wink, wink this sure makes me millions, and isn’t that what free enterprise is all about? Damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead, every man, woman, and child for themselves! Besides I give to charity [wink, wink] and I even promote chess [wink, wink]!”)
If this be true, hopefully Susan will not suffer from Stern’s manipulation and or insincerity. Perhaps Stern is going through a metamorphosis…If not, oh well live and learn…
“I remember Susan being quite dismissive of the so-called “Anna Kournikovas” of chess, but somehow she seems to approve of Stern. Why? Pretty babes may also be good publicity, and they definitely love chess and devote a lot of time to it.”
I listen to Howard daily. He can over the top sometimes. But every time he talks about Susan, it’s like he talks about his idol. I’ve never heard him say anything derogatory about Susan.

“Howard played some clips from his new “favorite” person, Bobby Fischer…. Howard said that Bobby was like a black guy who tries to join the KKK. Artie said that Bobby is railing against the Jews but his voice sounds like Melrose Larry Green’s. Howard played more clips of Bobby saying anti-Semitic things, like using the phrase “Dirty Jew”, and said that he might have to give Bobby a show on SIRIUS. Howard said he might need a co-host though just to move things along.”

“Howard reported he got back into chess during his vacation, and added he wanted to hire a chess coach in order to get better at the game.”
Thursday, August 3, 2006
“Howard said he has become so obsessed with chess lately that he joined a pay Website in order to play other people around the world, and he had the urge to play last night at 11 o’clock, but took the Ambien instead. However, Howard noted he woke up at 3 a.m. still thinking about chess, and decided to get out of bed to play a game on his computer…. Howard said he played his first game against the computer, and he got “killed.” … he played another match against an actual human being with a low ranking on the site, but he still got ‘ripped another asshole.’ … Following this defeat, Howard explained his ranking on the program was “retarded,” and added chess might now be out of his system because of the way he played and how badly he felt about himself because of it…. Howard said he was always good at checkers and was considering devoting his time to that game instead…. Double A then got on the line and pointed out he didn’t think Howard should be so worried about his chess playing, especially when he had Beth lying next to him every night.”

“Howard said he played a lot of chess over the vacation. He said he’s obsessed with it, has been reading books, playing online against people and computers, and even watching World Series of Chess matches online. He said it looked weird though, because the two guys he watched looked like bums, and were playing in what looked like a cafeteria, but meanwhile they’re geniuses at Chess. Howard started chatting with a guy who he watched compete online, and was praising him, saying he was impressed and wanted some advice on how to play. The guy revealed that he was only a nine year old kid! Howard joked that he then sent the kid a picture of Beth and told the kid that he may be a genius at chess, but that picture was of his girlfriend….”

“Howard commented his chess score had gone up to 1045, and he was about to enter a tournament. Howard added he understood chess strategy…”

“Howard began today saying he once again couldn’t sleep last night, and therefore resorted to playing online chess to pass the time.”
Wednesday, November 8, 2006
“Howard acknowledged he has become obsessed with chess to the point that was he barely thinks about anything else, and was even considering joining an online league to satisfy his cravings. While Artie didn’t think Howard should do such a thing, Robin was concerned about him just sitting in front of the computer. Given this, Howard said he knew a woman who began playing chess when she was 1 year old, and that she had a chess club that met regularly, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to play against strangers face-to-face.”

“…f…ing people play this game like its their life . . .”
“who cares chess is the most useless and boring game ever invented and a huge waste of time to even talk about”
“… I played because Stern said he did, and obviously its not my game, I lost in 5 moves because the people I played have played over 4,000 games, they know a little more than I do, not knowing how to play chess makes me a f…ing retard?”
“knowing how to play would make you a retard not knowing means you have a life outside of pocket protectors and math”
You folks (critics) are choosing to read Susan Polgar’s blog. She is choosing to mention Howard Stern. You’re not going to change her mind about Howard Stern, or anyone else’s mind who isn’t offended by him. Your only choice is to either stop obsessing on him or stop reading this blog. That’s it. Make your choice.
I listen to HS everyday and I play chess everday. I love it when chess comes up. Howard would talk about it more but I think he feels it would bore the audience.
Anything that promotes chess is good. I am sure when he announced that he was on ICC, many people signed up so they could find out who he is and play him in chess.
A great ad for ICC and Susan Polgar.
The “disgusted” people don’t know what they are saying. If you knew the show you wouldn’t be so offended. But even so, the show and the person are not the same. He has 3 daughters and lives a clean life. Much better than “wholesome” people like Rush Limbaugh who jet off to the Dominican Republic on a drug binge and then preach to us on the radio…
