Seems the director of the upcoming Star Trek sequel, J. J. Abrams, is such a fan of chess that he wanted 21 year old Magnus Carlsen to play a future chess champion in the movie.
Carlsen, a Norwegian Chess grandmaster currently ranked number one in the world, received the request after appearing on 60 minutes; however, due to problems getting a work Visa in time, had to decline.
Carlsen will be appearing April 24th on the Colbert Report, with the young chess champion quickly achieving celebrity status. Russian tycoons offered Carlsen a vast amount of money to play a game of chess, but the grandmaster turned the offer down citing how rather boring it would be. Carlsen, also a spokesperson/model for the G-Star clothing line, got that gig when Johnny Depp declined, and owns his own million dollar company, Magnus Chess AS, as well.
