When I see Garry Kasparov playing this week after a 12 year layoff, it prompted me to look up my own records. I retired from competitive chess in 1996 after I won the Women’s World Championship, completing the 1st ever World Chess Triple Crown (World Rapid, Blitz, Classical Championships).

In 2002, the Executive Director of the USCF, Mr. Frank Niro, convinced me to come out of retirement to help lead the US Women’s Olympiad Team in 2004. I agreed. So after 8.5 years of retirement, I played at the 2004 Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain where I won the multiple medals (Gold and Silver), including best overall performance and most points scored. I also maintained a world chess record of 56 consecutive game at the Olympiad, all on board 1, without a single loss. That was my last FIDE rated event.
So after a very long layoff, I played at the 2004 Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain where I won the multiple medals (Gold and Silver), including best overall performance and most points scored. That was my last FIDE rated event.

I was very rusty in the beginning. I also never played with time control G90 + 30″ increment. After I got used to it, I finished with 5.5 in the final 6 games for the best performance of the Women’s Olympiad, winning personal Gold for top performance and total points scored.

With the support from the Mayor’s Office in NY City, and the Sports Commissioner, the NY City Mayor’s Cup took place at the NY Athletic Club in the end of June 2006. The average rating of the field I faced was 2687.2. At that time, this was the strongest round robin tournament in US history, with members of the US Olympiad Teams (with the exception of Alex Stripunsky who took the place of Hikaru Nakamura who was not available).
This was my final USCF rated event, June 2006.
