Lone Pine tactic Chess tactic, Puzzle Solving White to move. How should white proceed?Source: ChessToday.net Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
I first thought of fixing the claustrophobic rook and stopping black’s counterplay by playing Rb5, Ra5, and after Bxa2 white captures on a3.
This seems too slow though, because black has time for Nd7 in there, and this really makes progress on the queenside difficult.
So to play more actively maybe b5. Some sample lines:
b5 Bxa2 Rxb7+ Kf6 c6 Be6 Ra7 +-
b5 Nd7 c6! Bxc6 Rxc6 bxc6 Nb5 d7 +-
Seems to work.
The line that is most critical to see before playing the 1st move is probably:
1. b5 Nd7 2. Rxb7 Bxb7 3. c6 Bc8 (3. ..
Bxc6 4. bxc6 Nb6 5. d7) (3. .. Ne5 4. d7 Nxc6 5. bxc6) 4. cxd7 Bxd7 5. b6 Bc6 6. d7 Bxd7 7. b7
Trying to get the Black king nearer to the White pawns doesn’t work either. Black’s pieces get in each other’s way.
1. b5 Kf7 2. c6 bxc6 3. bxc6 Be6 (3. .. Ke6 4. c7 Kd7 5. Rb8) 4. Rb8 Bh3 5. c7 Bg4 6. Rd8 (6. c8=Q works too) 6. .. Kg7 7. d7 Bxd7 (7. .. Nxd7 8. c8=Q Nf6 9. Qc7+) 8. Rxd7+ Nxd7 9. c8=Q
There’s also:
1. b5 Ne6 2. c6 bxc6 3. bxc6 Nc5 4. d7 Nxd7 5. cxd7
Is it this line…?
1. b5! Nd7
2. c6!! Nxb6
3. d7 1-0
1. b5! Nd7
2. c6!! Bxc6
3. bxc6 1-0
Tempted by 1.Rxb7+
eg 1….Bxb7 2.b5
0-0-0
-0-0-
I would have to try sacking rook here, since the alternatives look too slow.
1. Rxb7 Bxb7
2. b5!
Obviously white will play c6 next, and it’s unclear to me what black will do, the pawns are too overwhelming.
E.g.
A)
2. … Bd5
3. c6 Bxa1? (too late)
4. d7! Nxd7
5. cxd7 any
6. d8=Q
or
4. … Ne6 (no room for Be6 now!!)
5. c7! Nxc7
6. d8=Q
B)
2. Ne6 c6
3. Ba6 b6
also looks winning for white
I think This Is a wonderful tactic!!
Please Check my Answer – 1. b5 Nd7
2. c6 Nxb6 3. d7(with the unstoppable idea of d8 = Queen)

Rxb7 looks fun
Obvious (safe) choice for white is b5, and he will win the knight and he will have passed pawns marching on both sides of the board.
Rxb7+!
