Topalov vs. Carlsen (Round 12 – Linares)
1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 b6 3.g3 c5 4.Bg2 Bb7 5.0–0 e6 6.Nc3 Be7 7.Re1 d5 8.d4 dxc4 (Topalov is willing to allow the potential of symmetrical pawn structure for faster development. This is just a temporary sacrifice.) 9.dxc5 (So far, all book moves. Nothing unusual yet.) 9…Bxc5 10. Qa4+ Nbd7 11.Qxc4 O-O 12.Rd1 Rc8 13.Qh4 Be7 14.Qh3 Qe8 15.Nd4 Bxg2 16.Qxg2 Ne5 17.Qb7 Bc5 18.Bg5 Nfg4 19.h3 Nc6 20.hxg4 Bxd4 21.Nb5 Rb8 22.Qc7 Rc8 23.Qb7 Rb8 24.Qc7 (I have been having problem with my connection. I don’t think Magnus should repeat moves. He is a little better.) 24…Rc8 25.Qb7 1/2
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Goooo Carlsen!
Topa will eat him alive.
Definitely the most exciting match today!!
Thanks Susan!!!
Why “Goooo Carlsen” ? If Carlsen goes, Topa will win on time.
Can someone please post the other games?
Thanks!
Gooooo Topa!
Carlsen as a kid growing in a computer age has the biggest chances to learn computer style I think
is that the suit that topalov is wearing today or is that a old photo?, will Carlsen be able to develop further with the media pressure or will it affect his career like many “stars”¿?
hi Susan, good morning.
Can someone please post the other games?
You can watch the other games at ChessPro:

Can anyone give an address where I could watch the games live?
Many thanks,

doesn´t work 🙁
Can someone give comments on Anand-Aronian game. Anand in trouble ?
I’m enthusiasted by Svidler. Very sharp game. Exciting 😉
NSP
I bet #6 meal at McDonalds against small fries that Leko – Svidler is a draw.
I bet lazy Svidler is going to win Linares. He has much more reserves! There will be blood all over the boards where Svidler ‘ll play.NSP
Anand-Aronian = draw
” I bet #6 meal at McDonalds against small fries that Leko – Svidler is a draw.”
I accept and raise a BigMac!
However,
El Top is fighting for 5 man including Svid, Leko 😉
Damn it…Anand Aronian is a draw…..I wanted Anand to win…
What´s happening with the Topalov-Carlsen game? Are they still on move 9?
Can anyone paste the pgns of the other games here pls too….
Thanks and greetings from Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Does Topalov know what to do with queen?

Topalov-Carlsen so far:
1. Nf3 Nf6
2. c4 b6
3. g3 c5
4. Bg2 Bb7
5. 0-0 e6
6. Nc3 Be7
7. Re1 d5
8. d4 dxc4
9 dxc5 Bxc5
10. Qa4+ Nbd7
11. Qxc4 0-0
12. Rd1 Rc8
13. Qh4 Be7
14. Qh3 Qe8
15. Nd4 Bxg2
16. Qxg2 Ne5
Carlsen has equalized now (at move 16): So I think Topalov will go too far and lose.
well leko and svidler made it past the the 20th move. yay!
Topa has nothing to gain by pressing too hard, but Carlsen may.
Really Susan, this is unacceptable; you have agreed to do LIVE blogging and you have seemingly gone to SLEEP!
Susan, is everything OK with you ?
(no comment since move 9)
Topalovs 17.Qb7 was bad. Carlsen has now the far better coordinated forces.
zzZZZZzzzzzZz…
what is going on?
I think game will proceed as:
18…Nfg4
19.h3 f6
20.hxg4 fxg5
18 … Ng4 way played. No its going to be interesting.
Good thing Carlsen didnt chicken out and went for the sharp continuation
18…Nfg4
19.h3 f6
20.hxg4 fxg5
In that case, big advantage to Carlsen
after
17.Qb7 Bc5
18.Bg5 Nfg4
let’s hope for
19.h3 f6
20.Bf4 Rf7
21.Qg2 Nc4
22.hxg4 e5
23.Nf5 exf4
24.b3 Ne3
25.fxe3 Bxe3+
26.Kh1 Rxc3
27.Nd6 Qe7
28.Nxf7 Kxf7
29.Rd3 …
(I am a Topalov fan)

No, it’s not a mistake:
19.h3 Nc6
20.Nxc6 Nxf2
21.Ne7+ Kh8
22.Kg2 Rb8
looks good for Black
This gives Topa an opening to move the rook to the seventh rank.
Robert, it looks strange at first glance, or even second glance: “It looks like Carlsen made a mistake.” I asked Fritz, and he said, “Hmmm… it looks like Carlsen made a mistake (+.95). Let me check some more.”
A half minute later: “It doesn’t look SO bad (+.38).”
Another minute later: “It actually looks fine (-.06).”
And a little while later: “Nice move, Magnus! (-.38)”
Intriguing series of moves. If he pulls it off, this will one day be a famous classic. Too bad Susan isn’t here…

20. hxg4 Bxd4
Where are you Susan? I hope u r OK.
Yes, “it looks strange at first glance”, but Dan Dalthorp’s Fritz seems to be slower than my old, open source Crafty 18.7 engine (this is NOT the latest version of Crafty) on a 350 MhZ old PC…
I’m guessing 21. Nb5 to try to get his rook on the seventh rank.
Meanwhile, Ivanchuk-Morozevich are putting in an entertaining game, and Leko-Svidler is looking pretty even (black is a pawn down but white position is looking precarious).
Yes, 21.Nb5 may lead to an early draw:
21.Nb5 Rb8
22.Qc7 Rc8
23.Qb7 Rb8
24.Qc7
(that is if Karlsen misses 22…Be5 23.Nd6 Bxd6 24.Rxd6 Rc8 25.Qb7 f6 26.Rd7 Qg6)
where’s the live blogging?

It’s here, my friend, done by Robert, Dan Dalthorp and me (a Topalov fan from Bulgaria)

The point of 22…Be5 is that this move is made when the W Queen is on c7 (not on b7)…, so Rac1 is irrelevant
Susan has ignored three other great games and dropped this one, hope all is well!
The game is down to whether or not Carlsen wants to push a slight advantage with Black in a symmetrical position or take an easy draw as Black since he knows Anand already drew. He may play out a threefold just to see if Topalov self-destructs with a foolish queen move…after all a draw here and all hope of a miracle finish is over for him.
Draw by repition?
Draw.
Not a bad result for Topalov.
Game ends as draw by repetition.
Black could have played on after 25. Qb7 Bc5 26. Nd6 Bxd6 27. Rxd6
Na5 28. Qd7 f6 29. Bc1 Qxd7 30. Rxd7 Rf7 but probably he would just put in a lot of work for the same 1/2 point.
Anand should take over #1 world rating very soon now….my anticipation for the 2008 World Championship match Anand-Kramnik is growing.
Topalov playing so boring this tournament :/ . Didnt even go for the win with white against a 16 year old kid
Yes, Magnus is okey with a draw here
Let’s move to http://www.uefa.com now. Four more matches await us with no draws allowed 🙂
If Topalov wanted to play for some more, he could have played 24. Qa3 Bxb2 25 Rab1 Be5 26 Be3
But the position is still better for Carlsen than for Topalov
THe Peter from Peter’s city is winning now.
Susan, why not switch to Leko-Svidler?
Svidler is playing for a win and not doing a bad job of it…Leko has some problems and is in big trouble on his clock!
And the iceman wins against little Johnny.
The iceman won.
Peter from the thus named city won.
The russians are coming,
and they’re mostly welcome !
finally – MY – Peter won …^^ (After some consecutive draws – about two or three if i remember right … ^^… *tusk *tusk)
greetings

Hee hee.
topa seems distracted by attracive young men.
If opponent plays for repetition, its difficult to avoid draw.
Unless youre willing to go into an inferior position in hope of winning despite it.
When Svidler went for repetition in previous round… draw was unaviodable too.
Ken, if I calculated correctly, Anand has already overtaken Topalov as rating #1, based on Corus and Morelia/Linares. What’s more, Anand can still lose half a point relative to Topalov in the final two rounds and still end up higher rated.
