Students Take Chess Seriously, Learning Lessons Along the Way

Inside the Sacred Heart Parish School library, it’s silent. Except for the clinking of chess pieces and hitting of the timer.
Sacred Heart’s chess team is taking on Centerville Middle School for the title of IU13 champs. The Sacred Heart team is new this year, and made up of younger players than the other nine teams in the league. But they take their game just as seriously. Coach Erin Giordano doesn’t even know how to play the game, but knew her students needed a leader. “I don’t know how to play. Not a bit! It started with an email. I thought our kids know how to play, we might as well try it.”
