Korchnoi is an incredible chess enthusiast. It seems he cannot get enough of the game, always doing promotional events, or always playing in tournaments.
I would guess that Korchnoi was just very tired after a long weekend of playing chess, signing books and meeting with people. Keep in mind that Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps. I’m sure the 100 degree heat is tough on a 76 year old man.
Finally, he was playing black in the last round. I would guess he may have played more aggressively with white.
The fifth round was an impressive display of fighting chess. A whopping 17 of the top 18 boards were decisive, with the only draw being the last game to finish! As I told one Chess Life correspondent: Those who complain about the lack of fighting chess in the last round of big swisses should come to the next to last round instead.
He’s an amazing chess player.

Simply amazing!
What was the deal with Korchnoi’s last round draw with Serper after only 8 moves?
