King and Pawn endgame Difficult endgame, Puzzle Solving White to move. Is this a win, draw, or loss for White?8/8/k1p5/2P2K2/8/8/8/8 w – – 0 1 Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
trebuchet – one form of reciprocal zugzwang
ke4 white wins
Sorry, I mean Ke5 white wins
Not Ke4, not Ke5, BUT, you get one more try!
interestingly, if the position was moved down one rank( e.g.
White: Kf4, Pc4
Black: Ka5, Pc5
)
it’s a draw because the Black king can defend even after losing the pawn.
it’s a draw:
1. Ke5 Ka5!
2. Kd6 Kb5
just an example.
I think this is won for white.
1. Ke6 Kb7
2. Kb7 Kb8
3. Kxc6 Kc8
4. Kd6 Kd8
5. c6 Kc8
6. c7 Kb7
7. Kb7
so I think 1. … Kb7 doesn’t work for black.
What about 1. … Ka5 ?
2. Kd7 Kb5
3. Kd6 and it’s also game over for black.
So, black is lost after 1. Ke6.

I do not think it is a draw:
1.Ke5 Ka5! 2.Ke6! Ka6! 3.Ke7! Zugzwang! if 3…Ka7 then 4.Kd7 Kb75.Kd6, and if 3…Ka5 4. Kd7 Kb5 5.Kd6 wins.

Actually, 2.Ke6?? Kb4 is -+
As given above, 1.Ke6! Ka5 2.Kd7! is the correct way to spring the trébuchet.
