Lindsborg’s chess camp proves successful
LINDSBORG — A week of chess with one of the top Grandmasters in the U.S. was irresistible to 38 students who attended the recent chess camp at the Karpov Chess School in Lindsborg.
U.S. Grandmaster Yury Shulman and the Karpov Chess School’s new director, chess Master Tom Brownscombe, taught the finer points of chess to the assembled students.
While most students were from Kansas, a number came from other states, some as far away as Wisconsin.
“The chess camp was a huge success,” said Brownscombe.
There were chess players of all ages, from elementary school students to senior citizens.
Judging from the feedback everyone had a great time.”
What does one do at a chess school?
Students began each day at Bethany’s cafeteria, where they ate breakfast before heading off to the school. Upon arrival, they paired off and played an hour-long chess game, which each student recorded on a special score sheet.
After completing their games, they sat with Shulman and Brownscombe while they went over each student’s games. After two hours of intensive game analysis, it was time for lunch.
