Russian opposition activist and former world chess champion, Garry Kasparov has applied for Latvian citizenship, reports LETA.
Kasparov, a fierce anti Putin critiic, is believed to be applying for fear of a politically motivated prosecution. The 50 year old has often criticized the Russian government and it’s human rights record.
He’s requesting citizenship based on special merits after he won a youth chess competition during the 1970’s. Such an application will have to be decided by the Saeima.
Kasparov, whose son has Latvian residency, also announced plans to contribute to educational programmes in Latvia if awarded citizenship.
The activist also said he would pursue political activities in the country.
Kasparov, born in Baku, Azerbaijan, came to international fame as the youngest world chess champion in history in 1985 at the age of 22.
He’s currently the chairman of the human rights foundation.
