Russia’s chess icon Anatoly Karpov took part on Saturday in a chess commemoration tournament in the Czech village of Lidice, which was completely destroyed by German forces during World War Two.
On June 10, 1942, all 192 men over 16 years of age were murdered on the spot by the Germans in reprisal for the alleged assassination of a high-ranking Nazi official.
The rest of the population were sent to Nazi concentration camps where 82 children were later killed.
