Dylan (NY State 3rd Grade Champion and Top Rated in NY in his age group) and Tommy had a field day spending time with Josh. Josh just released his new book: The Art of Learning.
Susan, Many years ago Josh came to the Super National in Kansas City. He was hawking his father’s book and for those who would buy, a small note and autograph. Neat! My son wanted the book for purpose of a book report and not for chess. However, Josh left a big impression that day. He asked my son questions about everything and seemed to care about the answers. Finally, Josh asked him if he played chess. My son answered “Yeah, but my Dad always wins” Josh nodded his head knowingly and told him “Where is the benefit in always winning? You don’t gain anything past the knowledge that you have triumphed. In the pain of a loss, comes the motivation to change the outcome. It is in losing that we learn the most” I always wanted to thank Josh Waitzkin for that. He changed a life with his words, and while my son doesn’t use that for chess purposes, he does apply it in his life in general.
You know so many people! Hey Dylan! Good luck!
