Congrats to the champion IM Alan Pichot. What an outstanding performance!! 7 wins and 2 draws against strong opposition. 2 wins & 2 draws against GMs. 8 points exceeds the norm requirement of 6.5 points based on the average rating of his opponents. Can someone verify if this is his final GM norm?
Certainly one of the brightest sparks for the Americas. Another Argentinian Najdorf but this time home grown. Felicidades maestro joven. What an amazing sport chess is; when you can battle with a player almost 3 times your age. Congrats to the top seed and eventual 2nd place finisher Julio Granda Zuniga of Peru. Granda at 49 years old is almost 3 times the age of 17 year Pichot. Granda became a Grandmaster in 1986, 12 years before Pichot was even born.
It is also good to see state support for these events. This should be encouraged.
