The 2016 Khazar Cup was organized by the Gulian Chess Association and Iranian Chess Federation from 11th February to 18th February, in Zibakenar, Iran.
The event was a 9-round Swiss open tournament and a total of 77 players from 14 different countries took part in it.
The progress of the Iranian young players certainly deserves attention. After the youth domination at the Iranian Men’s Championship one month ago, now another Iranian promising player takes the gold. The 19-year-old IM Masoud Mosadeghpour lifted the trophy in competition of twelve Grandmasters and eight international masters.
Mosadeghpour scored 7/9 points to tie for the first place with Armenian GM Karen Grigoryan and GM Sergey Volkov from Russia but a better tie-break score sent him on top of the tournament. Grigoryan took the silver, while Volkov remained third.
