City View sixth-grader Claudia Munoz Robles, who wears the chess title “Woman Candidate Master,” took fourth place Saturday in the 2010 Texas Scholastic State Chess Championship in Dallas.
After winning six out of seven of her games, she was caught in a three-way tie for second place in her section.
Since ties are not allowed in the championship, the computer breaks the tie according to which round she lost.
Her only loss was in the fourth round, giving her fourth-place standing.
She competed with 102 others in her category; more than 900 children registered for the Dallas event.
“Needless to say, we are not only happy with her final results, but also proud that she was the best-placed girl in the final standings,” wrote her parents on her blog at www.claudiachess.blogspot.com.
She earned six of the seven points possible at the competition.
Although Claudia told her parents she was disappointed first place had eluded her, she said after the competition, “I really felt at peace during this tournament.”
