HAINES CITY – It was a competition of brains, not brawn at the Ridge Chess League Championship Tournament on Saturday.
More than 150 students from different area schools in Polk County competed in the tournament held at Boone Middle School in Haines City.
This was the third year for the tournament, though the Ridge Chess League has been around for 15 years.
During the tournament season, there are two tournaments held before Christmas and one in January.
At the end of the tournament Saturday, trophies were awarded for the winners from the previous tournaments.
Anne Eisinger, a coach for a homeschool team, said all team coaches help out at the tournament.
“We’re always looking for more schools,” Eisinger said.
The students ranged from kindergarten through 12th grade. Eisinger said high school students compete in an open division against adults.
Other divisions include kindergarten and first grade; second and third grades; fourth and fifth grades; and sixth through eighth grades.
