World Cup 2013, 10th August – 3rd September
Greetings from Tromsø Municipality
Dear contenders and contributors to the Chess World Cup 2013,
A warm welcome to the city of Tromsø!
Known as the gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø has for centuries been a starting point for polar adventures. Just as centuries ago explorers, hunters and traders organized their Arctic voyages from Tromsø, these days an increasing number of international companies, NGOs and research institutes focused on Arctic issues are based in our city.
In Tromsø we repeatedly highlight the importance of meeting places; for the exchange of ideas and inspiration, for reconnecting with old friends and for establishing partnerships for the future. In order to facilitate shared solutions and development we are dependent on dialogue and understanding, across disciplines, borders, cultures and traditional mindsets.
The 2013 World Cup is first and foremost about the game. Challenging yourself and possibly getting one step closer to victory. Almost equally important is nevertheless the opportunity to meet like-minded people and experience the wonderful qualities of living in the High North.
As Tromsø is preparing for the 2014 Chess Olympiad we are delighted and proud to be hosting the 2013 World Cup. Together with our regional and national partners we will do our utmost to ensure a memorable and joyous championship.
Best of luck to each and every one of you! Thank you for coming to Tromsø.
I wish you all a rewarding stay and welcome back to Tromsø in 2014!
