GIBRALTAR 8 January 2011
As Gibraltar, the capital city of chess, prepares for the best ever international chess festival at the end of this month, the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2011 is set to receive more grandmasters than ever before and is expecting the strongest tournament yet. Chess players from all over the world will gather in Gibraltar for 11 days – 24 January to Thursday 3 February.
Visiting the Rock yesterday ahead of the festival was Malcolm Pein Daily Telegraph columnist, commentator and organiser of the ‘London Classic Chess Tournament’, who gave a presentation to guests, sponsors and organisers at a special luncheon at the Caleta Hotel, home once again to the festival.
Guests included Governor Sir Adrian Johns and Culture Minister Edwin Reyes. Chess has become cool and “even rocks” Malcolm Pein said readily confirming the Gibraltar tournament has over nine years become the foremost open tournament in the chess world calendar.
