Welcome to the Gambit Chess Blog
By Dylan Loeb McClain
This blog is starting today to coincide with the United States Chess Championship in Stillwater, Okla., which runs through May 23. The field of 36 players includes last year’s champion, Alexander Onischuk, and Hikaru Nakamura who won the 2005 championship at the age of 16, becoming the youngest champion since Bobby Fischer.
Many questions surround this event. Some of the country’s top players who usually play in the championship, including Joel Benjamin and Larry Christiansen, are not playing. Part of the reason is that they feel the prize fund (less than $100,000) is inadequate, particularly compared to the last two years when it was $250,000. The loss of the previous sponsor, America’s Foundation for Chess, has a lot to do with that.
Gata Kamsky, who is one of the world’s top players, is also missing the championship because he is preparing to play in matches in Russia to select participants in the world championship tournament in Mexico in September.
