Maybe I do not get it, but to me — The outcome of this tournament now seems tainted.
Should not have the players been re-paired before the first round, to exclude the boycotting players? Instead as it is, a subset of players were staked to a free full point. This was known before the round.
What was the reasoning for not re-pairing? This is not a round-robin. Will every participating player get the same number of pairings with boycotting players (meaning the same number of free points)? Of course not.
Matches are more valid for so-called “world champion” events.
Yes there was a reason for not re-pairing the players – a thing called Women World Champinship regulations that were writen a year ago.
Among others it says:
3. 3. 4. Any player that withdraws after the pairings are announced shall not be replaced.
3. 3. 5. Players that fail to provide a satisfactory reason for withdrawal, after they have signed the player’s undertaking, may be excluded from the next World Championship cycle.
I don’t see why it sshould be tainted. Because one nation politically boycotted the competition (and few foolish players felt to theirs “it’s unsafe” talk?
Let me re-type the last paragraph:
I don’t see why it should be a tainted tournament. Because one nation politically boycotted the competition and few other foolish players fell for their “it’s unsafe there” talk?
looks like the chinese have an excellent chance to defend the crown.
