Havana, Cuba, Sep 22.- After his excellent performance at the recently concluded World Cup of Chess in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia —where he and compatriot Lazaro Bruzon advanced to the Round of 16—, Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Dominguez will participate in the Fifth annual SPICE Cup, the highest rated international invitational tournament in the United States, scheduled for October 15-25 in Lubbock, Texas.
Dominguez, the best Latin American chess player with an ELO rating of 2,710, will play in Group A accompanied by Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem (2717), local GM Alex Onischuk (2669), German GM Georg Meier (2648), and American GMs Yury Shulman (2608) and Ray Robson (2583).
The tournament will take place using a double round-robin system and no draw offer will be allowed prior to move 30. Unlike the traditional point-awarding system, three points will be granted to the winners of each game and each player will receive one unit in case of a draw.
The competition will be a Category 17 event with an average ELO rating of 2,656. (ACN).
