The 16th Annual Mid-America Open was held on March 16-18, 2012, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel St. Louis-Clayton, 7750 Carondelet Ave., St. Louis, Missouri.
The Open Section ended in a five-way tie with GM Ben Finegold, IM Ronald Burnett, FM Doug Eckert, Kevin Wasiluk and Sean Vibbert all finishing with 4 points. However, the Grandmaster took the title and first place bonus on tie-breaks from the rest of the group.
Final standings:
1-5. GM Benjamin Finegold ($893.60), IM Ronald Burnett ($807.60), FM Doug D Eckert ($807.60), Kevin Wasiluk ($807.60) and Sean Vibbert ($807.60) – 4.0
6-8. Howard J Chen, Gopal Menon and Zach Kasiurak (*$687.00)

I knew Ben’s dad from chess, when I was a kid in Detroit. Trying to remember, if I played him in a tournament. I do remember Ben and his brother, both a bit younger than me, but already stronger at chess. Congrats Ben!
